Often friends and family coming to the Hampton Roads area ask for advice on things to do while on vacation. Many come particularly with two locations in mind: Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. That makes sense – one has historical interests and a theme park, and the other has a great beach. When people come to the region for a vacation, and don’t mind a bit of driving, I like to remind them that the cities in between are worth seeing as well. Newport News, just south of Williamsburg, offers much to families and people interested in Civil War and maritime history.
Whether you decide to stay in Williamsburg, Norfolk, or Virginia Beach for your vacation, you aren’t more than an hour away from Newport News and the various attractions, shopping, and dining. If you have kids, you should seriously consider taking some time to explore to area. Here are just a few things you can add to your itinerary:
Lee Hall Mansion – Those with an interest in Civil War history will find Lee Hall a must visit. As one of the last antebellum homes in the region, Lee Hall has become a museum showcasing the rich history of the commonwealth in the mid to late nineteenth century. Keep an eye on the calendar of events for tours and reenactments.
Virginia Living Museum – Is it a museum or a zoo? The Virginia Living Museum takes the best of both worlds to present to kids and grown-ups a well-rounded view of our area’s natural habitats. You’ll learn about local flora and fauna and cool stuff like dinosaurs and sharks. Exhibits change periodically, so check their website.
Ferguson Center for the Arts – As part of Christopher Newport University, the Ferguson Center is on the premier entertainment venues in the Upper Peninsula. Every year brings some of the biggest names in music and comedy, plus Broadway musicals and plays.
Patrick Henry Mall and City Center at Oyster Point – For shopping and dining options, these two centers provide you with access to some of the best boutiques and eateries in town. From national chains to local favorites, you won’t go hungry here.
Newport News is close to Williamsburg and Yorktown, and is just a short trip through the tunnel from Norfolk and Virginia Beach. If you have a few days of free time on your Virginia vacation, why not stop by and see what’s happening?
